Location Based Services (LBS)

Location Tools

Overlay Media provides a number of tools that can help your business create a beacon based location service. These tools cover all aspects of developing and deploying a mobile location service.

Mobile Data Collection

Overlay Media has developed a mobile software tool to collect cellular, WiFi and GPS measurement data. The software runs on Android powered mobile devices. When running, the software creates log files that contain the measurement data (cellular, WiFi, GPS and timestamp).

Survey planning and management tool

The survey planning and management tool enables routes for survey vehicles to be planned in advance using a convenient web interface. A person planning the route can create waypoints by clicking on a map. The estimated journey time and mileage are shown as the route is created. The route can then be loaded on to a TomTom satellite navigation system. This tool is essential when conducting exhaustive surveys that require all roads to be surveyed. The second part of this tool is the route management interface. This allows previously created routes to be edited, viewed and marked as complete.

Data Processor

The purpose of the data processor is to integrate the raw measurement data collected using the mobile data collection tools to the reference database. This tool automates the following stages of this complex process:

  1. Load the raw data (log files)
  2. Identify erroneous data and remove it
  3. Persist the measurement data
  4. Calculate centre positions and coverage area

Data Visualisation

Once the data has been integrated into the reference database it can be visualised using Overlay Media's visualisation tool. These tools are extremely useful for identifying gaps in coverage, diagnosing errors in data, and understanding the coverage area of specific beacons (accuracy).

There are two parts to the data visualisation tool. The first is the interface that is used to specify what data is to be visualised. Using this tool the user can use an online map interface to define a polygon representing the coverage area to be visualised. This convenient interface allows the user to quickly drill down to the required data. Alternatively the user can specify other parameters (network operator, measurement dates, etc.) to extract the data to visualise. These tool generate KML files containing beacon data. Viewing the KML files constitutes the second part of the tool. These files can be viewed using Google Earth or Bing maps from Microsoft. Markers are used to represents beacons. The colour of each marker is set according to parameters selected on the online interface. The user can click on a marker to view detailed information about the beacons. This includes the full cell-id, MAC address, latitude and longitude, dates when measurements were collected for the beacon, and a link to view the raw measurement data for the given beacon.

These tools can be customised to suit your business needs. Please contact us to find out more information.
